What Does Your Business Need?
Understanding this before speaking with a search engine optimization company is imperative. If you are not sure what you want, how are they going to figure it out. Sure, they can take a look at your rankings, but that is not the only aspect of SEO. Do you need branding, reputation management, link-building, PPC, video marketing? All SEO firms do not offer every service. In fact, the best SEO agencies focus on one or two of these areas, and dominate them. Always ask before moving forward.
Are You Going to Shop Around?
We advise it. The first mistake that we see business owners making is hiring either the cheapest SEO company, or the most expensive. This is a problem for two reasons:
1. A company offering cheap services cannot possibly be in a position to give the best service possible. We know this, because we have been in the business a long time. It is an expensive task to outrank your competitors, but a worthwhile investment. If you have a company quoting you $500 per month to rank on page one, our advice would be to move on. Think about what you would offer a marketing director. Are they going to accept a salary that low? The good news is, many times it is only a temporary investment.
2. The company offering the most expensive service wants you to believe that they are the best by raising their service fee. It is all psychological. If I were a doctor, and my fees were triple what others in my field are charging, it may lead many patients to believe that I am the best doctor.
Look For Reviews of Each Company
Something we get asked quite often from potential clients is “can you show us what other companies you have been successful with”? Our answer every time is the same. We do not intrude on our clients privacy. However, we do provide many references, as well as reviews to show that we walk to walk. Think of it this way; how did you find this page? More likely than not, you found us by performing a search on Google or another search engine. When looking for a SEO company, this is the best review you can get. It shows that we know how to attract visitors.
Ask About the Founder
A good online marketing firm will share some minor details about their successes, by most will never share their failures. A great SEO company is happy to share their trials and tribulations that got them where they are today. They will tell you stories about their projects, some good and some not so good. If you listen hard enough, you will hear their passion for what they do (or lack thereof).
Know what you want and/or need, make sure the SEO company you decide on explains up front what expectations you should have, and a time frame to expect results. Search engine optimization is not like placing a paid advertisement. It is a process, and sometimes a long one. Never expect to see your keywords on page 1 within a month or two. Many times, a successful campaign can take up to 9 or 12 months depending on the competition for your industry. This should always be explained by the SEO firm you choose at the very beginning. If they are vague about when you can expect results, chances are, they have no idea themselves.
These tips should provide you a base of what types of questions to ask in your interview. If you receive a quote in an hour, even a couple of hours, chances are, they are providing cookie-cutter services that you don’t want anyway. Many times it can take a day or two for a good optimization expert to really dig deep into your website analytics to determine how much time will be required to move you to the top.
